CHANDIGARH,14.08.20-Sh. Omvir Singh, an IPS officer of 2004 batch of AGMUT cadre, a competent administrator with over two decades of association with Delhi Police is presently posted as DIG/Chandigarh cum- IG/Prison Chandigarh. During his service carrier, the officer supervised many sensational cases of murder, dacoity, robbery, kidnapping and other heinous crime. Discreet investigation into case of terrorist attack, nabbing of sharpshooter of Abu Salem Gang namely Jaan Usman and a kidnapper after shootout, involved in kidnapping of a doctor for ransom of rupees five crores and busting the gangs of Murder Manikandan & Ashwani, are some of the notable achievements while posted in Delhi and Pondicherry.

The officer gained remarkable appreciation for his onerous task of providing foolproof security to Hon’ble President of India. The services of the officer were also appreciated during his posting in Kosovo mission for his detection of tax evasion. The officer has also awarded with Prime Minister’s Police Medal for Life Saving award while doing rescue operations during tsunami disaster.

In recognition of the exceptional contribution towards his service to nation, the officer has been awarded with following awards;

  1. UN Peace Keeping Medal in 2000 & 2001.
  2. Prime Minister’s Police Medal for Life Saving award - 2007
  3. President Police Medal for Meritorious Service awarded-Republic Day-2014
  4. President Police Medal for Gallantry - Republic Day 2020.

While posted at Chandigarh as DIG, he was instrumental in setting up of first of its kind project “ERSS” dial 112 and E-Beat Book System in Chandigarh Police Control Room, for the citizens of Chandigarh City which was inaugurated by Sh. Amit Bhai Shah, the Hon’ble Home Minister of India.

Working as IG/Prisons Chandigarh, streamlining of overall Jail functioning has been a landmark achievement. Some of the major projects like prison management system, e-prison, inclusion of latest technology to strengthen the all round security system at Model Jail Burail being high security Jail are the real outcome of his strenuous efforts. Proper setting up of correctional administration in jail and rehabilitation of inmates after their release are also some of the major initiatives carried out by the officer.

Appreciating the services, rendered by the officer being DIG cum IG/Prison Chandigarh, the Chandigarh Administration recommended his name for President Police Medal of Distinguish Services to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India, New Delhi which has been awarded to him by the Hon’ble President of India on the occasion of Independence Day – 2020.
