The Enactus team of Panjab University in collaboration with Developing Indigenous Resources-India (DIR), a local NGO, celebrated the eve of Independence Day by distributing 150 reusable face masks, 100 ration kits containing the essential grocery items to last for 1 month for 1 family, among impoverished families with malnourished children, pregnant and lactating women of Janta Colony, slum region of Nayagaon, conveyed Mr. Harleen Singh, former President of Enactus team.

The event was held keeping in mind COVID-19 Management Guidelines issued by Government of India Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, averred Dr. Seema Kapoor, Faculty Advisor, Enactus team. 100 No. Face Shields were distributed to healthcare workers of DIR-India by the Enactus team. Dr. Asha Katoch, CEO, DIR stated that their field workers and senior staff are working every day against the risk of their own life against Covid-19 in the slum of Janta Colony helping the needy with groceries and medical health.

Prof. Kapoor also informed that the funds were raised through crowdfunding platforms and Social Media, mainly whatsapp groups. Many people came forward to support the cause. Mr. Vipan Seth, a 1977 batch alumnus of Dr.SSB University of Chemical Engg. & Technology and Director of Versatile Enterprises Pvt. Limited, Group of Companies, who are leading Manufacturers of Technical & Innovative fabrics came forward for sponsoring Reusable Face Masks under its CSR Project Amodini to mitigate morbidity and provide protection to the vulnerable communities. These washable face masks are made from highly breathable fabric with Meltblown (SSMMS) Filter inside to stop the bacterial activity.

Mr. Vipan Seth conveyed that “A Mask is simply not a face cover but a valuable civic essential with the potential to save lives”. Mr. Seth was happy to see the young members of Enactus team of Dr. SSBUICET serving the underprivileged communities and making a meaningful difference in their communities, while gaining the experience, skills and contacts necessary to build a successful career. He said that the Enactus students will definitely become value driven leaders.

With numerous collection & distribution drives done from time to time, the Enactus team has left no stone unturned to make lives better for those in need even during this tough time of COVID-2019 pandemic, conveyed Mr. Shubham Jindal, current President of Enactus Team. Mr. Akshat Kaushik, Vice President of the team conveyed that more such events will be held in near future.

128th Birth Anniversary of Prof. Ranganathan Celebrated

On the occasion of 128th Birth anniversary of Professor S. R. Ranganathan, National Professor and father of Library Science in India, the department of Library and Information Science and A.C. Joshi Library, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Ranganathan Research Circle(RRC), New Delhi organised a webinar on the theme 'Future of Librarianship in Digital Driven Era' through cisco webex app.

In the webinar, Prof.Ronki Ram ,Dean, Faculty of Arts, Panjab University was the Chief Guest and Dr. S. M. Dhawan ,former head, National Physical Laboratory library, New Delhi, Dr. R.K. Chadha,Former Additional Secretary, Parliament Library, New Delhi and Dr.Narinder Kumar,Librarian, University of Delhi, Delhi were the resource persons.

Dr.Jivesh Bansal, Librarian welcomed all the guests. Prof. Preeti Mahajan ,Chairperson of the department introduced the theme of the webinar and Dr. P.R. Goswami ,Former Director,National Social Science Documentation Centre ( NASSDOC), and Convener of RRC elaborated the history and activities of Ranganathan Research Circle. In his presidential remarks, Prof Ronki Ram congratulated the organisers and praised the works of Dr Ranganathan especially the five laws which are apt in the present scenario. He furthermore highlighted the importance and need of a library and applauded the efforts of providing the right information to the right person at the right time.

Dr.Dhawan highlighted the library services and products which help in resource discovery as well as library management using softwares which in turn assist in managing the resources in context with digital interface along with the need, importance and impact of Library Consortia.

Dr.R. K. Chadha said that we have moved from the digital era to the disruptive era which has impacted the whole system. He said under the knowledge economy, libraries need to change the landscape by closing demand of the current generation by providing skilful people with critical thinking and interdisciplinary approach. Dr Narendra Kumar elaborated the relevance of Libraries and highlighted that his works are relevant even today. He discussed the impact of increase in journals’ prices and other factors compared to educational situations resulting in a dilemma for libraries constantly.

More than 150 participants including the students of the department participated in the webinar. Professor Rupak Chakravarty presented a formal vote of thanks.

A three day online training program on Urban Risk Management being conducted jointly by the Dept of Geography Panjab University and National Institute of Disaster Management, Ministry of Home Affairs New Delhi was inaugurated today by Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor Panjab University.

Speaking on the occasion Prof Raj Kumar appreciated the relevance of Disaster Management and termed it as one of the strengths of Panjab University. The Vice Chancellor welcomed the collaboration between Panjab University and the National Institute of Disaster Management and hoped that it would culminate in a stronger bond leading to more research as well as extension activities.

The keynote address was delivered by Maj General Bindal the Executive Director NIDM. He was hopeful of a sustained partnership between the two premier institutions in the field of Disaster Management.

A webinar on the topic ‘Dharam Het Saka Jin Kiya' was organized in the Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies dedicated to the 400th Birth Centenary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Dr. Rawail Singh, Professor of Punjabi, University of Delhi was the main speaker. Guest of Honour was Dr. Vanita, Sahitya Academy Awardee & Convener, Punjabi Advisory Board Sahitya Akedemi, Delhi.

The web lecture started with a welcome note delivered by Dr. Jaspal Kaur Kaang, Professor & Academic in-charge, Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies.

In the lecture, the speaker gave a deep historical account of Sikh Gurus & Gurmat. Speaker gave a comparative analysis of different religious faiths and traditions of India in the Medieval and contemporary Time. Guru Tegh Bahadur gave his Sheesh for the sake of Kashmiri Pandits persecuted by Emperor Aurangzeb. He gave a steamed voice about the figure and actions of Guru Tegh Bahadur from the account of Gurbani and other contemporary sources. Speaker also stressed that Sikhism is not a continuation of Indian Philosophical and religious tradition; It is a distinguish and unique Religion and Philosophical System which is manifested in the Banis of Sikh Gurus. Dr. Ravail Singh stressed upon a very need of interdisciplinary studies of Gurbani and Sikh Historical sources in current time.

Dr. Vanita gave a poetic account of Guru Tegh Bahadur through Poem entitled “Baba Raag Bhi Tu, Vairaag Bhi Tu.Tera Roop Nirala Satguru”. She also laid stress upon the action and martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur through different meaningful sources.

Many researchers, students and scholars participated in the webinar. Dr. Sheena Paul, Professor, USOL PU Chandigarh expressed his gratitude towards the Teachers, Scholars and Students and gave a vote of thanks to all.
