Mohali 26th June-An awareness webinar on Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking was organized today by Punjab Police, Patiala & Aryans Group of Colleges, Rajpura, Near Chandigarh. SSP, Patiala, S. Mandeep Singh Sidhu was the Chief Guest on the session. Dr. Anshu Kataria, Chairman, Aryans Group was the moderator on the webinar. The webinar was attended by the students & staff of Aryans Group.

Ms Parminder Kaur, Project Director, IRCA, Saket Hospital, Patiala; Mr. Amritpal Singh, Counselor, Anti Drug Addiction Centre, Patiala; Ms Mary, Counselor, Anti Drug Centre, Red Cross, Patiala; Inspector, Pushpa Devi, Police Education Cell, Patiala were the speakers on the occasion.

S. Mandeep Singh Sidhu enlightened the students on various aspects including depression, peer pressure, unintentional dependency of medicines, lack of self- control etc and motivated them to spread awareness at their respective places.

Ms Parminder Kaur said that Drug addiction is a serious problem amongst youngsters & controlling it is a major challenge. For any such effort to succeed, it is necessary to channelize the creative energy of the youngsters against the menace.

Mr. Amritpal Singh highlighted several causes that are observed in the young generations who go towards drug addiction. He added that the drug demand reduction programmes should emphasize on not stigmatizing addicts, but rather trying to educate people, particularly school and college students.

Ms Mary & Pushpa Devi proposed recommendations such as self belief, self-control, reduction in communication gaps, strong family bonding, self-awareness and the involvement in healthy activities as a workable way out to counter the drugs inclination.

It is to be mentioned that as per the reports about 850,000 Indians inject drugs, 1.3% of children between 10 and 17 years reported current use of alcohol, about 460,000 children and 1.8 million adults need help for inhalant dependence and 7.7 million Indians require help for opioid dependence. He advised students to pledge not to be diverted by any wrong company and to always uphold the esteem of their faith and their family.
