Chandigarh, 24th February 2018: Hon’ble MP Smt. Kirron Kher today launched the 2nd Kalam Express at UT Guest House, Chandigarh. With the positive response shown to the first unit of & assessing the need for more such units to cater other identified CWSN, Smt. Kirron Kher donated a vehicle worth Rs 10,00,000 through MPLAD fund on which Indian Red Cross Society further incurred an expenditure of Rs 1,00,000 on fabrication to make it children friendly. The second fully equipped Kalam Express will cater more childrenat their doorsteps. The proposed area to be covered through the new mobile unit includes Dadumajra, Indira colony, Kishangarh, Palsora, Hallo Majra&Kajheri.

“Kalam Express” is an initiative of Indian Red Cross Society, U.T., Branch, Chandigarh that aims to promote, develop and maintain the skills needed by children with special needs to function in their homes and social setting. This is a mobile Educational cum Rehabilitation unit for Children with Special Needsliving in slum, rural and rehabilitation colonies of the city that cannot commute to schools for attaining Education and also require different therapies because of their physical limitations.

An effort of Red Cross Society, the Kalam Express aims to provide the services to those CWSN who cannot afford it and are confined to their homes, and the need is to include them in the mainstream Society. A team of Special educator & a physiotherapist have been visiting these children in the mobile unit equipped with audio visual and tactile teaching aids like Braille kits, toys, special Oro Motor kits etc.

Indian Red Cross Society, U.T. Branch, Chandigarh had launched its first mobile unit of Kalam Express on 23rd June 2016 with support of State Bank of India under CSR.
