Chandigarh,17.01.18-MCM DAV College for Women, a premier multi-faculty postgraduate institution, is celebrating year 2018 as the Golden Jubilee Year of the institution. As part of the celebration of 50 glorious years, the Postgraduate Department of English organised a one-day National Seminar on Celebrating 220 years of MirzaGhalib. The seminar was a commemoration of the boundless contribution of Ghalib in the Urdu poetry tradition. Col.G.S.Chadha, Registrar, Panjab University adorned the seminar with his presence as the Chief Guest. Dr.Gurdip Sharma, Sr. Syndicate Member, Panjab University, Dr. Sunil Koshla, Principal, constituent colleges (PanjabUniversity), Balachaur,  Prof.SubhashMariya, Retired Principal, DAV College, Chandigarh, Prof.Akshay Kumar, Prof. Gurmeet Singh, Prof.Deepti Gupta, Prof.C.L.Ahuja, Prof.PushpinderSyal, Prof.PratibhaNagpal, Prof.MeeraMalik from Panjab University, Dr.KavitaMariya, Associate Professor (Retd.), Govt Home Science College, Chandigarh,Dr.Jagdeesh Mehtafrom DAV College Sector 10, Chadigarhwere the Special Guests on the occasion. The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from across the nation with 100 participants. 

Keynote Speaker Prof.AnisurRehman (Retd.), JamiaMiliaIslamia University, New Delhi and Senior Advisor, Rekhta hailed the seminar as a channel to create new appreciators in the arena of rich Urdu poetry. Speaking  on 'Ghalib: Our Contemporary', Prof.Rehman said that it is impossible to even attempt to critically evaluate a legendary and complex poet like Ghalib who prevailed all times and upon everyone. Setting the tone of his lecture with 'PoochtehainwohkiGhalibkaunhain, koi bataoki hum batlayenkya', Prof.Rehman traced the biographical details of this poet, lexicographer, critic, prose writer, letter writer and historian whose unusual imaginative vitality, linguistic innovation and inimitable language distinguished him from his contemporaries. Prof.Gurupdesh Singh (Retd.), GNDU, Amritsar in his lecture on 'Invocation to Diwan-E-Ghalib' said that despite being an extremely complex poet who assimilated diverse influences effortlessly by blending elements of Persian and Urdu, and created a pattern of layered meaning, Ghalib is a popular poet because of the magical appeal of his embellished work that is proximate to our existence, and the wisdom and philosophy encapsulated in his work. In a highly interesting lecture on 'GhalibkeMuhaware', Prof.AbdullahBismillah (Retd.), JamiaMiliaIslamia University, New Delhi opined that everytime one reads the prodigious Ghalib, a new dimension emerges. Leaving the audience in spilts by sharing the humour in Ghalib's poetry, Prof.Bismillah effectively brought out the unique wit and creative genius of Ghalib as he unfolded the extensive usage of idioms in Ghalib's poetry through examples. Prof.Satish Kumar Verma of Punjabi University, Patiala while sharing his thoughts on 'Ghalib- EkPunarchintan' referred to Ghalib as the poet of the masses who struck a chord with them. Dr.Ali Abbas of PU spoke on the topic- Ghalibaur Hum wherein he highlighted the enigmatic pull of Ghalib's poetry which is the result of the way his work is contextual even in the present times. The students of music department presented soulful renditions of MirzaGhalib that left the audience completely mesmerised. A translation activity of Ghalib's work was undertaken by the students of the college followed by recital of MirzaGhalib. During the valedictory function, certificates were given away to the participants.

 A self-professed poetry lover who would often relate poetry to concepts in Economics in her classes, Principal Dr.NishaBhargava said that MirzaGhalib continues to enthrall the lovers of Urdu language and poetry till date and a seminar like this becomes pivotal in bringing to life the rich heritage of Ghalib.
