Downfall of Ethics in Indian Politics Discussed at the Department of Gandhian and Peace
Studies of Panjab University

CHANDIGARH-May 17, 2013:  The weekly Seminar series and an Open House discussion was
held today at the Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies on ˜Downfall of Ethics in
Indian Politics” Professor Manohar Lal Sharma, chairman of the Department initiated the
discussion and highlighted on the downfall of ethics in Indian Politics. He expressed
that the main cause of the downfall of Ethics in Politics as well as public was due to
not following Gandhi’s Theory of the relationship between ˜Ends and Means’ in which
means are as important as the end. On the other hand the Indian Politicians are
following mechavilli an approach where end becomes the supreme consideration and the
purity of means becomes insignificant. In this way, to achieve the end, one is free to
adopt all kinds of means from bad to worse. Therefore, we will have to check it to
minimize the corruption in politics. Further, Mr. Gurminder Singh, a fourth semester
student of the Department spoke on the subject and discussed various factors responsible
for this problem. He had prepared some valuable charts also. Similarly Mr. Pardeep Kumar
(M.A.-2nd Semester) student also expressed his views on the declining status of ethics
in Indian Politics. Dr. Manish Sharma, Assistant professor in this Department also
participated and contributed his valuable ideas on the subject. Mr. Kiyanoush Ghalavand,
an Iranian Ph.D. Research Scholar in the Department also spoke on the subject but with
some reservations on the issue of Ethics and Politics considering these two different
views in Iran. He explained in detail about the status ofIran in this matter. Here Dr.
Manish Sharma added that A person with social responsibility must be an ethical person.
At the end there was healthy discussion among the students.  Other faculty members
including Dr. Seema  Thakur, Mrs. Ranjeet Kaur  Dr. Nitin Sharma and Mr. Ashwani Kumar
also participated. All the participants had to say something different on “Ethics and
Politics “but the discussion concluded that we all must keep the ˜Ethical Values  in
politics as practiced by our great leaders, especially Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru
and  Lal Bahadur Shashtri, informed by Professor Manohar Lal Sharma,
Chairman, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
