NEW DELHI-23.09.22-Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Shri Imran Hussain today reviewed the functioning of Weights & Measures (Legal Metrology) Department and directed the Weights and Measures Department to ensure that residents of Delhi provided quality products with accurate weights and also proper declaration as per commodity rules on each and every packaged product keeping in view the coming festive season.

The Minister directed the Assistant Controller, Zonal Officers or Zonal Inspectors to make regular visits to their jurisdiction area and ensure that the norms of Packaged Commodity Rules are strictly being followed by the shop keepers/manufacturers/dealers without creating any panic in the market. The Department will also ensure that only verified/stamped, electronic/manual weighing instruments are being used by the establishments.

The Minister was informed by the Weights and Measurements department that the Department carries out regular/surprise inspections in markets, fair price shops, petrol pumps, gas agencies etc. to check whether measuring and weighing units bear valid verification stamp and deliver correct weight, measure or volume of commodities to consumers. The Department initiates action against short measurement, use of defective and non-standard weights and measures as per provision of relevant Act and Rules. The Minister also expressed that any establishment should not be harassed unnecessarily and their trade should not be disrupted unnecessarily.

In view of the coming festive season, Shri Imran Hussain directed the W & M Department to precisely ensure that the consumers are not overcharged for the packaged commodities i.e above the MRP and so that consumers get the due value of the cost paid on the commodities. The Department of Weights & Measures also directed that regular visits should be conducted to check the instances of overcharging and action as per law should be taken against the defaulters. Shri Hussain also asked the senior officers to review the functioning of field staff from time to time.

The Minister also informed that W&M Department is also developing a people friendly mobile app for the convenience of people of Delhi. Citizens can make complaints/suggestions through Mobile apps which will be addressed within 48 hours . The new initiatives and programmes of the Department will also be informed through Mobile app.
